What is Acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is a technique in which Dr. Bryan W. Barry of Chiropractic and Acupuncture Health Care Center inserts very thin, solid filiform, sterile stainless steel acupuncture needles into very specific areas of skin to treat various health problems.  These acupuncture points are part of a complex meridian channel system that correspond to the internal organs.  The organs are classified as Yin or Yang.  The needles may be manipulated manually or stimulated with small electrical currents (electroacupuncture) in order to restore and maintain the flow of energy Qi (chi) in the channels.  Acupuncture has been in use in some form for at least 2,500 years. It originated from Traditional Chinese Medicine and has gained popularity worldwide and in the United States since the 1970s.

Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities, reduce pain, and promote physical & emotional well-being.

What Occurs During a Treatment Session?

When you visit Chiropractic Health Care Center of Hamden, LLC, Dr. Bryan Barry will obtain a complete health history, perform a physical examination, including the Acugraph EMI exam.  Once an accurate diagnosis is determined, acupuncture treatment may begin.  Acupuncture needles will be placed in specific points (acupoints) on your body or ear (auricular acupuncture) corresponding with your particular health needs. While the needles are being inserted, you will feel little if any discomfort during the 20-30 minutes the needles are retained, during which time most patients report feeling very relaxed, some even fall asleep.

How Many Treatments are Needed?

In general, complex and long-standing chronic conditions require one or two treatments per week for two to three months. If you have acute problems or other special needs, an individualized treatment plan will be developed for you by Dr. Barry during your first visit.

What Conditions Can be Treated with Acupuncture?

The World Health Organization endorses acupuncture, and clinical studies have shown it to be a beneficial treatment for many conditions, including  chronic pain, migraines, headaches, neck and back pain, tendonitis, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, insomnia, infertility, allergies, anxiety, depression, PTSD, generalized pain syndromes, fibromyalgia, fatigue, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.

How Much Do Treatments Cost?

Surprisingly to many people, acupuncture treatments may be covered by health insurance.  We are happy to discuss coverage and cost of care.
